Review Multiversity Thunderworld Adventures #1

 

Always a fan of characters from the earliest days of comics history, I jump at the chance to write reviews of new books that feature them. So when I heard that Grant Morrison and Cameron Stewart were presenting a book on Captain Marvel in their excellent Multiverse series, I called "dibs" on it. I'm a staff writer for Broken Frontier, and with the site's preference for creator-owned, indie, and off-the-beaten-path comics, I've been able to review some terrific books.

Books featuring Captain Marvel are rare and definitely off the beaten path. Which is a shame. DC Comics did a great job giving the creative team freedom to incorporate favorite elements of classic Captain Marvel comics with enough character development and plot twists to keep modern readers turning pages as fast as possible.

My Blog for Vintage Truck Magazine

Happy New Year, everyone!

For the last few months, I've been writing an online blog for the folks at Vintage Truck Magazine. Each month, I preview truck-friendly shows/events from all across the country. I'm having a blast talking to show organizers about their shows, and I've never met such enthusiastic truck and car owners who are so dedicated to sharing their hobby.

One of the swap meets I featured in the current blog is coming up on January 4, 2015. The Strictly Street Rod Club is hosting its annual "first swap meet of the year" at the Will County Fairgrounds in Peotone, Illinois. I took the photo above a few years ago at this event, and I can't wait to see what turns up there this year. Fingers are crossed for good weather!

Review Roche Limit #1

There's nothing quite like three special little words to get a girl's heart fluttering -- mystery in space.

Image Comics has cranked out a few seedy mystery titles, and it's no wonder that noir fans are happy campers these days. Noir has moved well past the standard private eye stories of the past (although those are still plenty of fun) and branched out into other corners of the bookstore. Most notably, science fiction-based titles laced with dark mystery have been well received. You have only to look at The Fuse and Letter 44 for proof.

Writer Michael Moreci and artist Vic Malhotra have teamed up for the latest mystery in space, and you'll either dig it or not. Mystery junkies won't be able to resist, space fans will be onboard, but people who just jump on bandwagons of the buzzworthy need not apply.

2015 Truck & Tractor Show Guide

Submitting the information for your show is FREE, just use the link above.

If you are (or belong to a club that is) running a show dedicated to antique tractors, send in your information.

If you're running a show dedicated to antique trucks, commercial trucks, any kind of trucks, send in your information.

And if your car show also welcomes trucks, you can include the information in the Show Guide -- so send in your information!

The deadline for submissions is Monday, November 3, 2014. Get to it, free publicity is difficult to find!

Interview: Kill Shakespeare's Conor McCreery and Anthony Del Col

Kill Shakespeare: The Mask of Night is a pirate adventure on the high seas that features Shakespearian characters in somewhat unfamiliar roles and situations. It's a clever reimagining of characters you think you know that also includes Shakespeare's own words on occasion, giving lit fans a host of "Easter Eggs" to pursue.

Creators Conor McCreery and Anthony Del Col were kind enough to answer a bunch of my questions about the hit series, and you can read the full interview on the Broken Frontier site HERE.

Review Dead@17: The Blasphemy Throne #1

It's the beginning of the end for Nara Kilday and her friends as creator Josh Howard kicks off the final installment of Dead@17. The Blasphemy Throne will wrap up the mystery of Nara's life, deaths, and resurrections in seven issues, and if you're a longtime follower of the series, you won't want to miss the conclusion.

Howard's art is instantly recognizable and an appropriate complement to his story.

Review Moon Knight #6

The entertaining six-issue run by Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey concludes this month with Moon Knight #6. These guys have successfully revitalized the character and offered enough new plot points that Marvel's lunatic detective of the night should remain relevant and interesting going forward.
